ASAS Introduces New Guidelines On
Matchmaking Advertisements

Guidelines are now in
place for advertisements featuring matchmaking services.
The Advertisting
Standards Authority of Singapore (ASAS) has recently introduced the
guidelines following complaints and concerns by members of the public
and AWARE (Association of Women for Action & Research) over
certain advertisements by non-accredited matchmaking agencies.
According to ASAS, its aims is to preserve the respect and dignity for
women,irregardless of nationality, who are often the main target of
such advertisements.
Under the new
guidelines, matchmaking agencies are not allowed to place
advertisements that are likely to mislead their potential clients such
as:
- Guaranteed Marriage
- Ladies are certified
and guaranteed by doctors to be virgins
- One dollar Brides
- Free brides for
matchmaking
- Year end great
discounts for brides
In
addition, matchmaking agencies cannot rank or grade women according to
their physical looks.
All advertisements
shall be restricted to the classifieds section in print publications
and are not allowed to contain visuals.
